Visiting a Japanese Tuner's Studio

I was visiting a Japanese tuner Akihiro Ikuta's studio recently. He moved and started tuning work a couple of years ago in the mountainside which takes 2hours by car from Kobe.
His studio is in The Oya Art Village that is a remodeled old school building. Some artists are doing creative activity in this building.
His studio used to be used as a "badminton" club. But now it is his place. And he has a showroom upstairs. We can see and try to play almost all kinds of steelpans he made.
He showed me two tenor pans. One was made in 2014, and one was made in 2015. There is a total difference in these pans. 2014's one doesn't have a smooth surface, and that sounds not so cute. I can say it is just a developing piece. But 2015's one is an improved one. This one has a smooth surface, and I can say this one certainly has "steelpan sound". I felt a "short history" of him but that is a giant step for him.
There is a steelband in this village. He is working with this band as a tuner. This band is so lucky because Japanese tuners are a small number yet. I wish he could make the masterpiece someday. I want to support him.
Inside of the studio his work is very active now.

スティールパンチューナー（スティールパンを作る人）である生田さんの工房につい最近、行ってきました。
彼は数年前に神戸から２時間ほどの山奥に拠点を移して、チューニング作業をしています。その工房は”おおやあーと村”と言う、古い学校を改装した建物にあります。そして他にも芸術家の方が何人か創作活動をされていらっしゃいます。
生田さんの工房はその昔はバトミントン部として使われていたお部屋ですが、今ではスティールパンを製作するお部屋になっています。そして２階にはショウルームがあって、彼が作っただいたいの種類のスティールパンを見たり試奏したりできます。
そこで２つのテナーパンを見せていただきました。ひとつは2014年に作ったもの、もうひとつは2015年に作ったもの。それはまったく違うものでした。2014年に作ったものは打面も滑らかではないし、可愛い音もしない、まだまだ試作品といった感じです。でも、2015年のものは、改善されていました。表面は滑らかになっていたし、なんと言ってもスティールパンらしい音がするんです。ひとりのチューナーの”小さないけれど大きな一歩を踏み出した”そんな歴史を感じずにはいられませんでした。
同じ村にはスティールバンドもあって、生田さんはそのバンドでチューナーとしても働いています。チューナーがいつも近くでスタンバイしてるバンドだなんてすごいラッキーです。日本ではチューナーの数がとても少ないのです。いつか彼が傑作を生み出だすと信じて、応援していたいなと思いました。
